White film and dry leaves

Hello everyone,
I'm fairly new to household plant care, and since the beginning of March have been caring for a few species of bonsai on my balcony. The area I live in has very hard water, so I have been using distilled water to water them. One of the bonsai, however, the shrubby cinquefoil, developed a weird white film on the base of the trunk almost right away. It isn't visible if the conditions are wet outside, but on drier days it is very noticeable. I would have thought this was due to hard water, but I haven't been using our tap water. Could it be mold?? And does anyone know what I could do about it?
Also, I have a young wild cherry tree that I believe is around 3 years old. At the beginning of April I wired it to develop an S-bend, but in the last couple weeks the few leaves on it have started to feel really dry and curled up. I water it when needed, but I'm not sure if my attempt at wiring hurt the tree, or if perhaps I overwatered her? Any ideas?
Thanks in advance.
