Acer Palmatum - Wilted leaves on a single branch was created by Ricky73

Hi all,

the leaves on one single branch of my Acer Palmatum suddenly became wilted and withered.
I realized it last night when watering, it was all OK until a couple of days earlier.

I see no signs of spider mites, aphids or fungi, and the rest of the tree looks absolutely OK.

We've had some unusual strong winds here in Milano, Northern Italy, in the last 3 weeks, requiring more frequent watering than it is normal for this period.
However, this branch was pointing to the inside of my balcony, so it was not so much exposed to strong wind and sun.

I've now turned the tree 180 degrees and pruned off that branch.

Do you have an idea of what may have happened?
Thanks!

I think you might damaged the branch when wiring it.

Thanks Tropfrog,
that's the best answer I was expecting - as I was afraid of pests, insects or similar.

Yet I am still a bit surprised as I've wired that branch exactly 1 month ago, on March 19th, with the buds just opening... so I presumed any possible damage would become evident earlier.

The buds opened normally and the leaves were ok until Saturday...

In the eastern holliday my mother allways cut brances of trees in bud, takes inside and put them in a vase of water. That is a tradition in Sweden. Gives a feeling of spring inside long before it is spring outside. The buds extends and burst into leaf and stay like that for a good fortnight despite they are removed from the tree. But they have no chanse of survival and will be due for composting after that.

Excactly the same will happen to any branch that has been disconected to the roots of a tree in one way or another. So I dont find your information strange at all. Just a proof that it was what happened.

Yes, very clear. Only, I did not expect such a small disconnected branch to stay healthy and thriving for as long as one month.:)

One month is indeed long. I guess it depends on temperature and species. I havent made that misstake on a maple......yet. so dont know what to expect.
