Hello 名媛直播 lovers. Im new to this forum and had already found great discussions on typical challenges that we all face in cultivating and caring for our trees.
I need some feedback/help in regards my Acer Palmatum condition. I live in the St. Louis,MO area and the tree didn't wake up from its dormancy. Last winter was relatively mild but we had a week with constant single digit temperatures. I grow large size bonsais and was not able to move the tree inside.
The buds that were formed back in 2020 fall are looking dry (probably from frost) but the tree is still green under the bark. I cut a few areas to look for Verticillium Wilt but couldnt find any indication in the cross section this is the cause.
Any ideas suggestions? Again the main trunk is green when scratched.
The first pic is from when i acquired a year ago, the second pic the design I created over the months.
Ill take some additional pics close to the branches later.
Thanks

Stop scratching the trunk. It does not help the tree.
Best you can do is just wait. Provide for it, water sparingly and wait.
The picture of the tree in full leaf does not tell anything about what the tree looks like now, I am afraid.

I have a dozen maple seedlings I dug up last spring.
In February they started to swell the buds, since the weather was in the 70's F/20's C, for over a week, so I repotted them. Then the weather did its Alabama thing and dropped to just above freezing. Then back up, then down. One time it dropped to quite below freezing and I put them in the garage.
The buds all did the same thing as for you, and the bark started getting that shrivelled look that says it is dead. I gave up on all but a couple of them.
The scratch test seems to me to be useful only to verify that the tree is dead, but I did do the scratch test on a couple to verify that they were dead, and they all came up brown. Never one to give up, I kept watering them when I watered the rest of the trees.
As of yesterday most of them have buds swelling again, growing around the buds which seem to be dead, and the buds are higher up the tree than the brown scratch test spots. The parent tree in the front yard just started leafing out this week. I have no idea what is going on, but maybe it was a good idea to keep them going.

It is not easy to evaluate the status of the tree with that background. Can you try with black background?

This was before I repotted a couple of weeks ago. I read that a reason for not breaking out of dormancy could be root rooting related or poor drainage. It had black soggy/smelly roots which I pruned and cleaned. The other roots seemed healthy. You can notice some green in the drunk.
