Looking for advice... Zelkova 名媛直播 was created by 名媛直播Virgin

I recently purchased a Zelkova bonsai from a local nursery. This is my first bonsai tree. Does anyone have any suggestions for wiring/specific branches to prune/general next steps to set the bonsai on a good path for the future? How would you go about styling this tree? I attached some pictures below for you to get an idea of what the tree looks like.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thank you so much.

The first question you need to answer is why did this tree attract you in the first place? Why did you choose this specific tree? What are the positive and what is the negative features? That is highly individual and can only be answered by yourself. It should be used in creating a long term plan by streangthen the positive parts and supress the negatives.

But you dont need a plan just yet. Your first task is to let the tree grow freely for a full growing season. Most likelly you will have more options by then. After that it can be good to look into rootwork and repotting. Next spring as growth starts. The growing season after that, if the tree recovers well, you can start prunning long elongated branches as they harden. This will force the tree to put out more branches closer to the trunk and give you even more options. So after 2-3 growing seasons you will have had enough time to study the tree and the art of bonsai. But also there will be enough options for you to setup a long term plan.

Remember bonsai is an art, it is up to the artist to decide the route. And bonsai is a maraton not a sprint. Patience is the best tool for success.

With that said. In my opinion the whole top of the tree needs to go in the long run. Handlebar branches is not concidered a good feature and same with the inverse taper below.

..... but all of the good advice from above will be in vain if you keep the tree inside, where it will die.
