Hi guys,

I was given a new bonsai for my birthday.
They didn’t get the type of bonsai so I was wondering if you could give me a hand.

I have been watering it once a week.
I have found the moss has gone slightly brown so I have been misting it once a day.

I have found some small white bits around the soil, is this of any concern??

Any advice would be great’

Thanks!

Not all agree that crassulas can be bonsai, but still some well respected bonsai artists work with them and I have even seen one at a bonsai show. No matter what anyone else thinks, If you want to grow it for bonsai just go ahead.

Your plant is a crassula ovata "hobbit". A cultivar not found in nature. The species comes from south africa and are succulent. It means that it is well adapted to very dry conditions. Moss and water spray is totally against its nature. The best care is in summer hot and well water once every 1-2 weeks. It is important that the soil is bone dry a few days to a week before next watering. In winter the best care is cold but frost free and bone dry. No water at all as long as temperature is below 10 c. It can be overwintered in living room conditions. Then it will need some water, maybe once a month or around that. Water only if the leaves looks wrinkly.
