Old pot tree, what may it be and what should be removed? was created by Florian?

Hi all,

I am new here and need some advice.

I found a tree that lived its entire life in a small pot. I found it without pot submerged in water and covered in moss. I do not know the history of this tree. From the look it could be a willow species, or something else that is popular/available in German garden centers,

What I did so far was to remove about half the roots (maybe more) to fit it in the shallow container. Here I also cut the main root which was about 4cm in diameter and approx. 10 year old by counting the rings. The substrate is a mix of plant soil, akadama and lava. I think this is fine and should give plenty of nutrients but also drains well. I also removed all obviously dead branches and the moss.

Now, since I already did all of that I am not sure if I can proceed further right now.
I would like to remove all the branches and I do not know what to do with the big dead part on top.

Can someone give me a little advice here?
Also, what's the best guess on species?

Many thanks for advice.

Best regards
Florian

Hard to tell without any leaf, did it have any when you found it? I think you should wait by now, the plant passed tru' a lot already.
I mean, it will now recover from roots intervention and try to shoot new leaves, we usually don't do both, unless we know that the species can take it, and the season will help.
But I understand it's a rescue situation, now time will tell. Good luck!

I agree with Albas. Probably best to leave it alone for now. Not much more to be done at this point. You should wait to see what branches produce new growth so that you can determine what can/should still be removed and to better determine the species.
Hope this helps.

Thanks for the advice. I leave it as it is.

After some more observation I am a little more worried. Bottom and many roots look good, top half is most likely gone, and mittle is hard to judge.

I do not have leaves but I will keep you posted if something happens.
