Details:
I was given a bonsai as a gift a day ago via bunning warehouse (Aus).
It said to be around 4 -5 years ago (2016) with the tree standing at 12 cm.
I have noticed that there are 5 leaves (Lower down on the plant) that have distinctive yellow tips. What does this indicate?
I looked into it, and I can't determine whether it is over watered or underwatered?
Also, should the plant be kept outside in direct sunlight or inside where it will be sheltered but will recive very little sunlight?
I will answer any question to the best of my bonsai knowledge (very little)
Thanks

You must not keep this plant inside. The leaves do not sound as if they are a problem. It is a living plant, leaves die. The plant does like some shade in the heat of the day, but sunshine is essential. It is a very young plant that needs a lot of growing, Box are slow growers.

Box tend to discolor a bit in winter, nothing to worry about.
Place it outside, loads of sunlight and it will be ok.
A picture would be helpfull too

Also are those the roots at the base of the tree??

Well... it's just a very young box ( 2 years ?), planted in a bonsai pot, labelled bonsai and sold 4 times more expensive than the same box in regular plastic pot.
This needs at least 10 years of growth ( box is a very slow grower) in the ground or a large container before it will remotely look like a bonsai.
Bear in mind that once the branches are not green anymore they are very difficult to bend.
.. and place it outside, or it wont even make it through its first year!

Totally agree with you. Buxus need exposure to sunlight and water them in a timely manner i.e. always ensure the soil is not dry on the surface. For me, i usually place them under morning sun for hours then move them to place with shade. Exposure to sunlight for long term could damaged the leaves (not sure if that make sense but I will avoid putting them under direct sunlight for long hours).
