Beginner help please :) was created by Derik1313

Hi

Finally got myself a bonsai after many years or admiring from a distance.

Bought one at a local flower market (literally the only one I could find) and since I am in Hong Kong, couldn't really get much information from the seller (since I don't speak Cantonese).

So, I need a bit of guidance so I don't kill this little guy before my adventure even begins.

Could someone please tell me:

1) What is it? I was hoping to get a juniper since research suggested it an easy beginner bonsai but like I said, this was the only one I could find

2) From the attached pictures, is there anything that needs urgent attention regarding the soil, drainage, pot etc??

I am well aware that my first bonsai will be a massive learning experience and this forum will be of great assistance as I learn but just want to make sure I give the tree the best chance initially.

I also bought scissors and liquid fertilizer.... Anything else I need for the first few steps?

Thanks!

It is not Juniper, looks like Chinese Elm. Get the wire off. If it is draining well then it is fine, otherwise it may need to be re potted, but when I don't know because of your climate

Much appreciated

I'll just hope it's not the 'I die 99% of the time' tree and see what happens. I'm in Hong Kong so humidity is really high most of the year so hopefully that goes a long way.

Any idea on these final 2 trees in my collection?

1) The one has wire in already, should I leave it in there? What is the purpose so early?
2) I'm not sure of the state of the soil in both but should I just leave them or repot and hope for the best?
3) Anything urgent I should do with the leaves or just leave it as well?

Thank you very much

-are your trees outside or in? ( should be out)
- wire is not biting in as far as i can see ( but the picture isnt good enough to be sure)
- if water still drains fast there is no need to repot
- the only urgent thing to do is place them outside if they are not.

Yes, they are outside on my balcony (only spot available so hopefully it's okay)

How can I check if the water is draining fast enough? How fast is 'enough'?

Don't know how you give water, but what you should do is water from above with a gardening hose or watering can, like a rain shower, untill water spills from the drainag hole(s) underneath. Does the water enter the soil fast, or does it take some time to be absorbed, or does it just run off the soil.
What you also can do is take the tree gently out of the pot ( if it isnt tied in) and check if the roots form one big clump, or circle around in the boundaries of the pot.
