Can I put my indoor Chinese Elm outside in the day? was created by nick_gadget

I got an indoor Chinese Elm for Christmas (I’d guess 8-12 years old?) and it’s doing great.
However, it’s started growing very large leaves, which I suspect is due to a lack of light.
I don’t have a good sunny spot in the house, but it’s beautifully sunny outside. It’s also 2°.
I’m concerned about putting it outside in case I either damage the new growth or it triggers the tree to drop it’s leaves.
Am I worrying about nothing? What’s the best balance between warmth and sunlight?
Any advice very gratefully received- I love this new hobby!

What your question really ought to be is "How long can I continue to keep my outdoor chinese elm inside before it suffers".
It belongs outside- though you will want to introduce it gently if there are freezing temperatures it is not used to.

Glad you're enjoying the new hobby.
As @@SF says, you can keep chinese elm indoors but they (like 99% of 名媛直播) struggle indoors. A combination of lack of light, wrong humidity, not enough air circulation, no dormancy period in winter etc. mean the trees health tends to decline over the years. Here's a better explanation:
The best advice for the long term health of your tree is to keep it outside all year round. Having said that, if your tree has been inside all winter and you put it outside into 2 degrees C (especially if you repeat this process by bringing it in and out over a number of months) you're likely to give the tree a shock and risk it dying.
The best advice is therefore to wait for spring until things warm up, put it outside and then leave it out there.
If you are particularly keen to have the tree indoors for most of the year then I would recommend a grow light indoors to prevent larger leaves and of course be wary that the health of the tree is probably going to suffer over the longer term.
Best of luck!

Hmmm I think it's better to introduce it to the outside gradually for a week or two, your elm shouldn't even have any leaves at this moment, however, I don't know about letting it into dormancy on middle/late winter...
Maybe some of the more experienced guys here can help you giving a better insight.

trees need a period of roughly 6 weeks of shortening days and ever lowering temperatures to go dormant. If this plant has been inside till now, I would wait the last few weeks till spring.

Hmm, my chinese elms never loose more than a third of the leaves in winter. Right now they have been under 0 degrees constantly for 3 weeks without loosing much. I guess it is a difference in where they origin and where they are held.

Same here. Maybe now with the -15 nights that the tree will be bare, but I cannot tell. It either is burried below a foot of snow, or it is in s hed which is snowed in too. Not sure where I left it. Might be dead now. THen it might drop all leaves

This was mine, always outdoor, however that apartment that I used to live was a lot windy...
Unfortunatelly, this died for poor watering while I was on a travel. Lesson learned there.
Mid winter
Spring (unfocused, sorry)
