From reading that article I see that the trees can die either from too much or too little water in the winter. I've read Japanese black pine prefer to be more dry. We generally have cold, snowy winter here in western Pennsylvania. It receives full afternoon sun at the moment. How often do you add additional water during the winter? As snow is not guaranteed and it may go a while without precipitation.

I water the same way in winter as the rest of the year and for all my trees. Giving them a lot of water so it runs out the drainage holes with an almost steady stream when the soil is damp but not dry.
How often is that you may ask? In november I cannot remember watering at all. It was cloudy all the time so the trees didn't drink much. In december it was also cloudy, some of them got watered but not all. In january I think all got water at least once, some twice.
I have my trees protected in a greenhouse and have fairly big amount organics in the soil. Weather, soil mix, pot size, tree size and species. All play a rol in how often you need to water.

In winter when froze watering is not a great idea. In fact, putting it in full sun when it is really cold is not great eiter: When the sun hits the branches and foliage it heats them up and they start to get dry. With the rootball frozen, they cannot take up new water and the branchlets can die off. So best to not have them in full sun when frozen.
In winter it is best to keep the pots dryer than normal. I do not water my trees at all between oktober and march. But I live in a very wet region.
