名媛直播 soil for Fukien Tea tree was created by Lucasalc46

Hello! I'm new to bonsai and have been greatly enjoying this new hobby. I was wondering if the soil I have planted my fukien tree in is too "dry" in the sense that it doesn't retain enough water. I live in a warmer climate in Texas, where the summer highs can be up to 100 fareheit. it's a premixed bonsai soil made out of 1/3 Akadama, 1/3 lava rock, and 1/3 pumice. Would you guys recommend adding some sort of organic material?

If so, will I hurt the tree by removing the soil and mixing in that organic matter? I've only just repotted the plant from it's plastic container 3 days ago.

Also, would a top soil be recommended? I've seen some people add moss, but I'm not sure if that is done with more tropical bonsai.

Thanks,
lucas

After changing the soil mix I would leave the roots alone. Next time mix in some organics, but not now.

What you can do is sprinkle some fine stuff like coffee grounds on the top and let them wash down into the soil when you water. Then sprinkle some more. By yhr time summer gets there there maybe enough to help, hold water.

Or, put some pieces of pine cone in the blender and chop them up pretty fine.

If it does, that is no issue.

Think of your fukien as a tulip. Something produced in large numbers to satisfy a markets need for beauty and not ment to survive.

I know it is not so funny to hear. But if you search the forum for fukiens youll see that there are a lot of threads from beginners about dieing fukiens. None of them come back and report success. Even experienced bonsai artists have a hard time keeping them survive. They cannot go outside in winter and cannot take indoor conditions.

Oh ok. How come they seem to be recommended for beginners if they die so easily?

Because they are easy to propagate in a green house and produce a sellable plant.

ok. So I shouldn't expect this bonsai to last for a long time even if I care for it well?

I doubt anybody who does bonsai recommends them for beginners.
To be honest, it is an easy plant to sell for the trade. If they really wanted to sell bonsai, they could sell trees that are hardy for our climate (elms) or better fit for our living rooms (ficus) and provide them in a shape that can more easily be developed into interesting trees (No default S-shapes).

These plants are mass produced by farmers often in Asia that have no interest in bonsai. They need to provide homogenous products, which is in contrast to bonsai. And every 10 seconds spend working on the plant reduces their income.

Every tree will live very long with the right care.

If you keep it indoors you are not caring for it well.
If you keep it outdoors you are not caring for it well.
