Depending on your "winter": if its freezing lets say -10 and more day and night it is not a good idea to just throw it outside.
Gradual adoption to colder temps is a good way to proceed: unheated room, unheated garage, unheated garden shed.

Are you recommending that I should put the tree outside now, in the US winter. Protecting from frost but letting it get cold.?
Trees need an environment as much like where they evolved as possible, allowing for being in pots rather than in the ground. If you are in a moderate place in the US like Alabama, where I am and the temperadrop below freezing three or four times a year, yes outside right now with no extra work. If you are in Wisconsin, you need to do some work. If your tree evolved in a place with little freezing weather, even more work.
Ask Google about bonsai clubs near you. Find out what they do for trees of your breed, and follow their advice.

people. its a pomegranate. That is a greenhouse protection plant. Letting them freeze through is for most of them risky. Moving it into mid-winter while actively growing is a fairly certain death sentence.

Trees are more sensitive to cold if they hasent been gradually introduced. Anything below 10 degrees celsius will put it to much needed dormancy. Less will risk it, since it hasent had any authum before winter. So 9-10 celsius and as muvh light as possible is the best you can do. After the winter just keep it outside and it will take more cold next winter.
