Can I put my trees out in the below zero conditions? was created by molinero

I have a number of very young trees which have sprouted from seeds about three months ago. They are struggling inside the house. Unfortunately we have below zero weather here at the moment. I’m a bit sceptical about putting them outside.

I have a small greenhouse (plastic cover) I was thinking of using.

Has anyone used uv lights for growing trees? I was thinking of doing this too.

What you should have done is placed them outside 3 months ago...
But you did what you did and good that you want to give them a chance by placing them outside ( inside they will die).
They are young saplings, so a gradual transition to outside temps might be a good way. Unheated room first, then a garden shed or something like that, then outside protected from wind.

These seedlings should indeed be outside hardening off. If you have a greenhouse put them in there and cover them with fleece or plastic or a cultivator with cover for a while, but you will likely lose them if you keep them inside.

I have them out. It’s cold but the sun is out here.

You sowed them in the completely wrong time of the year. Young sapplings will struggle in subzero temperature no matter how slow the transition is. Plants are not evolved to handle freezing until one full grow season has passed. Try to find a place with 5-10 degrees and owerwintering there until risk of frost has passed. That is your best option.

That is good, now isulate the tent a little bit more using bubble plastic wrap and put in a frost protection heating device.
