Japanese Maple help

Hi all, I have this Japanese maple stock and I really like the nebari on it. I'm deciding on styles at the moment and I think I am leaning towards developing the right hand branch and making a twin trunk. If anyone has any other suggestions please feel free to let me know.
My main question regards producing back-budding. I have pruned over 50% of the upper foliage in hope of budding a new leader out of the lower node (where the yellow line is and an eventual chop on the red). Would this be enough or should I prune harder? Also if so have I missed my opportunity timing wise? (I live in Australia).
Any advice or opinions would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers,
Sam.

Hey sam!
That nebari looks great indeed.
So, it would be a good idea to proceed in cutting the branch where you marked it but you cant be certain that another bud will grow where you want it to grow.
Perhaps leaving the main trunk on and waiting a couple years for more lower branches to form and then repot it at a different angle with the top leaning towards the viewer might seem a good idea. its up to you though!
Also, i wouldnt cut that small branch to the right just yet, use it as a sacrificial branch to thicken the trunk more (If that is your intention)
Best Regards
Nick
