I received as a gift from my granddaughter to get in the hobby. I believe it is a Juniper, anybody confirm the ID?

It is a juniper indeed, and has to be outside or it will be dead before you know it.

No, i dont know how your climate is but if it start to freeze lets say -5 /-10 for days in a row with negative temps in the daytime too you can protect it a bit by placing it in an unheated garden shed or something like that. Because it is in a pot the rootball can freeze completely which could kill your tree.
