That depends on so many variables, first of all tree species, moment in the season and your knowledge ( but if you have to ask here that variable is already known...).

I frequently cut more than 60% of the roots away. In fact, I did that today on 9 trees. If you know what you are doing, use proper substrate, aftercare and at the right time of the year, it is not an issue.
If you do not know what you are doing, or you do it at the wrong time of the your or provide the wrong aftercare, it is often a death sentence

Thanks for your informations! My bonsai just have little white stuff in it’s needle after I pruned it’s root. I gave it plant anti fungal spray and now it’s doing great! Thanks everyone!
