Beginner Questions was created by KatieKatie24

Hello,

I'm new to the world of bonsai and I am nervous about taking proper care of my first tree hence those silly questions here. I received my bonsai (Chinese Elm) a few days ago and the arrival care instructions were to soak the tree in water for 10 mins. I followed the instructions and haven't watered the tree since as the soil still seems quite damp.

Today I noticed that few leaves started turning yellow. Is that normal for the tree in new environment?

Another thing I noticed is that the roots, the thicker roots on the surface of the soil appear wet and seem to be a bit sticky to touch. They're almost like a bit slimey instead of solid. Is that a bad sign?

The tree was from reputable seller so I would hope that there should be nothing wrong with it this early on. However being a newbie I might be panicking for no reason so thought I get some reassurance here.

Many thanks for all advice.

Soak the tree is not the right way to water.

It sounds ?n your description like the surface roots are rottening.

Where do you live and where do you keep your tree?

Thanks for replying. I thought it was bit odd when following instructions... Next time I'm planning to water from the top but waiting till it dries a bit. Oh no! Any way to stop this the rottening? I added some photos as it might be easier to see it. Does it look like there is a problem?I live in south of England. My tree is currently placed on a kitchen windowsill, facing east, as this spot gets most light compared to other bits of the house.

You will get lots of answers saying put the tree outside. It really needs to be out in the sun.

Is there a drain hole in the bottom of the pot? If not the roots will rot. Get a pot about the same size with holes, move the tree, and fill in the sides with garden soil. Then leave it outside in the sun.

OK, England, winter, and sun may not be consistent, but leave it outside anyway.

While the tree gets used to its new life, go to the How-To section of the forum and read up on basics, getting ready for spring.

Well, we had a frost this morning but it still needs to go outside but I would leave it now for a couple of days until there are no frosts. But don't keep it in long. Try putting it out during the day then when the forecast is no frost leave it. Forecast for tomorrow is no frost.

Thanks for the suggestions to put it outside. Unfortunately its a bit tricky for me as I live in a house that does not have outdoor space... I thought those species could live indoors? Would it not get cold outside?

There are two drain holes in bottom of the pot, and the pot is raised so it won't stand in water. So hopefully no need to repot.

Any comments on the roots? It's hard for me too say if its rooting. As I only had this tree for couple of days I'm bit concerned that it might have been unwell already when it was bought. I dont want to make it worse.

Chinese Elms are hardy and need cold. You might be lucky and keep it alive. It also needs light which it does not get in a house, fine in the summer but not in the winter. The roots are fine, the way you watered was not as has been said. Losing a few leaves is not a problem, and it may drop some more. If you must keep it inside then it needs to be in a south facing window, and away from any heat source.
