Zelkova - leaves shrivelling, help! was created by Antoinebouvier

My brother bought a zelkova for my birthday, the only issue is that he took care of it for around 3 weeks before he saw me and gave it to me! He said then when he bought it the leaves were green and full of life, but by the time that it took for him to give it to me the leaves have no shrivelled up and are starting to fall off. I’ve attached images, I was just wondering if anyone could tell me whether the tree is dead or whether this is natural and what I should do to help it get its life back! Thank you

The tree is not dead yet. It looks as if you have it inside, if that is the case then you need to get it outside soon. It is very straggly and could do with some pruning as well. Watering is key to health as well as light. There is plenty of information on here about Chinese Elms. Losing leaves in winter would be normal but not if it is inside.

Thank you for your help. It seems that the tree has new shoots with fresh leaves growing off, in places which should normally be pruned. Whilst the leaves on the main body are still a bit stiff and discoloured. Is it worth still pruning the healthy branches and leaves or letting them grow?

The whole tree is overgrown, but the reason for the state of the leaves is the main problem. I think it could be a watering issue or at some time it has got very dry. That is assuming it is not inside.

Okay thank you - so it being overgrown doesn’t look nice but it shouldn’t have anything to do with the tree and leaves health?

It’s currently inside on my east facing windowsill. I am at university in the north of England where temperatures are currently between 5-12 degrees Celsius. The ticket that came with the bonsai says the ideal temperature range is 15-25 degrees Celsius so I’m cautious to put it outside.

The ticket is rubbish. Totally wrong, it is mild outside at the moment and can easily cope. East facing is no where near enough light for it, if you want it to survive then you need to put it where it can get light and cold.

Do you know of any tree in the entire world that lives naturally indoors? Or migrates inside when winter is coming...?
