Leaves turned black and yellow was created by JohnSmith14

I'm a novice bonsai owner and have had the tree in the picture attached for six months. It's been positioned as in the picture in an east-facing window for most of that time and has seemed happy enough. I recently went away for a week and left it in the kitchen so a housemate could water it. When I came back, the leaves (usually lime green) had begun to wilt and had dark patches on them. I brought it back up to this spot but the leaves carried on changing colour and it now looks like this.

The ventilation in the kitchen isn't great, so the only thing I could think of that could've caused the change was the heat in there. (I think my housemate kept up the watering while I was gone.) Anyone able to explain the cause and how/ whether the tree can be salvaged?

Many thanks

This tree should be outside, as it shed it leaves in winter. Fall color is beautiful.

The leading cause of death among bonsai trees is too much water (drowning) or lack of water (dehydration). Overwatering and underwatering may cause browning of bonsai leaves. It is important to also know the accompanying signs of overwatering and underwatering.[/color]

Judging from this forum make me think that the leading cause for bonsai death is keeping them in room temperature year round. But maybe this forum is not representative for the hobby in general?

It is representative of the very first and main mistake 99% of new bonsai newbies make, that is indeed expecting that trees would be harmed by cold weather.

Fact is, a lot show up here but very few stick around after that. That tells me they either give up on bonsai after that first experience or dunno...

Maybe not representative of the hobby in general, but probably representative of those hobbyists whose trees live a long time.

Every fall there are those who say the will try keeping it inside anyway. Every spring none of them say it worked.
