There are no pictures, but if it is a hardy deciduous tree then that is what happens in autumn. If it is not then we need to see a pictures to see what species it is. Do not re pot it anyway,

Can't tell from the pictures what the species is. Obviously root bound, but not the time of year to be doing anything about it. It looks very dry, when and how are you watering?

The soil is very damp at the moment. I normally fill the sink up. Submerg him in the sink so the water just goes over the top of the soil. Wait for the bubbles to go then take him out. Normally do this every 2 weeks. Is this correct?

No it is not the way to water. water when needed, not to a schedule. Check every day and water from the top. If the branches are dead then yes. If it is an Elm then it should not be inside which is why the branches are elongated due to cronic lack of light.

To water any plant you should pour water from the top and let it wash through the soil out the holes in the bottom of the pot. Practically any tap water has some amount of mineral content, and you don't want the minerals to build up. Watering from the top washes the minerals from the last watering out. Soaking from the bottom washes the minerals to the top of the soil and leaves them there.

If something happens and the root ball dries out enough to shrink from the sides of the pot, then the only option is to soak it long enough to make the root ball expand again. You should not let it get this dry, but things do happen. Make sure they don't happen very often.

wow nice idea and use soils are 100% organic matter, then you can repot the tree at any time of year – if you can find a warm, sunny place to keep it.

The forum has some links under How To about soil composition. All organic is probably a mistake. While the exactly recommended makeup changes from time to time every single book I have, back to 1967, and every single website recommends something like sand, gravel, or something to keep organic soil from getting too compact.
