Hi all,
Just an inquest into whether people use artificial lighting to aid their bonsai growth and health. I have a chinese elm bonsai but the lighting in my house is fairly dark, I struggle to get 5/6 hours of daylight anywhere really. I've seen some bonsai are kept under lamps and wondered if this was something I could do through the winter before I place it outside in the spring. Any information would be well received.
Thanks,
Joe

Kept outside all through winter? Even in the frost/snow? I live in the UK and most of what I’ve read is that they are brought inside in the winter and put outside in the spring?

I don’t think anywhere in the UK winter climate is more harmful to a helm than your living room’s.
It will have no problem at all staying outside. It will likely suffer or even die if you keep it indoor...

By and large a tree or any plant wants the environment where it has evolved. For millions of years plants have not migrated indoors in the fall, and for millions of years they have gone dormant on signal from the weather. It will do best if you let the tree have the environment it has evolved in.
