I have a nephew battling a lot of demons and know he would LOVE this as a gift and hobby. My questions is - should I start him with seeds or a small tree? and with either, any input on a starter plant? Know he can work into this but one that is easy to start with. I'd appreciate any input,
Russell

I would say, gift him a trip to tree nurcery of bonsai nursery, show him tree's that are easy to maintain and let him pick out a tree from that selection. (ofcouse tree's within your budget). Show/tell him how to take care of it. Do some bonsai practice together to get him in to it. Give him a month later some seedlings to encourage him to get more tree's.

Agree. In terms of which plants to go with, it’s hard to tell without knowing your location and climate.
In general I tend to suggest junipers, as they can be extremely forgiving and grow quite slowly, giving novices a lot of time to understand what they’re supposed to do...

Yes, I would start with a young juniper, outdoors, and learn from it.

If you are in an area where chines elm can be outside all year round (just a few nights colder than minus 10c per year), that would be my choice for first tree. You can find decent priced starter material, they have natural small leafs, Hard prunning, root work, wiering they can take alot before killed and they also grow very fast, so there are quite a lot of oppurtunities to work on it every year for an eager beginner.

Thanks a lot for sharing. Indeed it is a good idea for a gift. This thread reminded me of the
with LEDs that I received as a gift from my wife yesterday and how pleasant this gesture was. She also put a picture of the two of us inside and it was so cute that I felt really good because he thought of me and wanted to do something nice for me. I am also thinking of some gifts now, and I want to amaze her quickly, and I hope I will succeed.
