Help - Sageretia (Chinese elm) Do I repot and why does it stick out of soil was created by ManBearPig

Hi, recently brought this Chinese elm. Can I repot him now? It is autumn here but he has an indoor spot so does the season matter?
Also I don’t know why he sticks out of the ground the way he does? Any answers to these questions or any tips is greatly appreciated.
Many thanks.

Trees need to be outside, inside they will die. Do not repot now, wait until early spring ( but if you persist on keeping it inside it might be already dead by then)

Trees need an environment similar to where they evolved. Most trees have to have a dormant period and if they don't get it they have problems, usually killing them.
Someone might think it is cruel to put the poor little thing out in the cold rain and snow, but actually it is cruel not to.
A hot, dry window sill with no air motion is not a good environment. If it is still warm there, that means winters shouldn't be bad, so it really wants to be outdoors.

I am sorry Ivan. I Think Most of the tree species is around the eqator line and dont need dormancy. However Most of them Will not survive in what we call living room conditions in the northern hemisphere. Too dry f?r them.

Even most of the tropics have distinct growing seasons where not temperature and light drive the dormancy, but dry and wet cycles. This is one of the reasons many ficus drop leaves when moved: The changes in air humidity and watering signal that a dry period is about to start.
