Hi all
I’m a newbie and would be grateful for some help, I have grown a Japanese Black Pine and stumped at what to do next?
It is now 1 foot high and trunk is the size of a pencil, should I pinch out the top to stop is height, should I wire, I was thinking formal up right.
I have a picture of when small this year and this year again but with much growth.
I am based in the UK

The more needles siphoning water from the soil the thicker the trunk will get.
Depending on what you want, probably the best thing to do is put it outside, fertilize appropriately for time of year, and let it grow. Put in the ground if you can, but probably in a bigger pot.
Chop it off when the trunk is as thick as you want it.

You need to grow this on for several years yet. It is still too small to do much to it. I would either plant in the ground for two or three years, or pot on into the next size pot several times to get a thicker trunk. Once you have it to a reasonable size then you ca start styling and pruning. I would not do any pruning next year just let it grow, water and fertilise well all next spring and summer. Pot on in the spring without touching the roots into a free draining soil.

Thank you
At the moment the pine is outside, obviously here in the uk it’s the beginning of fall now, when would be the best time to put into a bigger pot? Also will it be ok outside over winter or should I put into the shed . Many thanks.

Many thanks for taking the time to reply, I just don’t want to make any mistakes and ruin it.

The UK, as you know, is a big place, and the weather in Southampton is not the same as in Aberdeen.
The easy answer is find a bonsai group in your area and discuss black pines with them. Or, look up exact care requirements, compare that with your climate, and make a plan that fits the tree. I know nothing about pines of any kind except that they appear in my yard like weeds and they are a pain. That isn't any help to you, right?
I think it will want to be outside unless the weather where you are gets real extreme. You might need to shelter it a little from harsh winds, depending. You might need to put it in an unheated room, again depending.
