Hi 名媛直播 Empire,I bought a Juniper Procumbens Nana today, and thought I would do my first cascade. After feeling pleased with making sure I done trim it like a hedge(learned the hard way) I also saw a few things online...Does back bidding occur on a juniper nana?Did I overdo it with cutting so much off? I didn’t trim any of the roots yet. Maybe I just got too excited :(Any help is appreciated.

I am unsure why the second photo came out sideways. So sorry about that!

You have taken a huge amount off, probably too much so you will find that this plant will probably throw juvenile foliage. The strength of Juniper is in the foliage so it is better not to remove more than 30% of the foliage at any one time. Do not think about re potting for at least a year for it to recover, it will be stressed for that long now. The apex is too flat, and also the branch next to it but that can be corrected later. Just water for now and allow it to recover.

Looks pretty good for a start. You should be fine.

Junipers procumbend nana (Nana is addition for small). THe species is juniperus procumbens. THey are not known for assive backbudding.

The location where your cascade starts looks a little off. THe branch, to my eye, moves too much back to the main trunk. But.. All in all, nice start. Now leave it alone to grow for half a year.

Thank you for your advice. What is juvenile foliage, and why does it seem like it’s not good to throw juvenile foliage. From my knowledge, new foliage is good and signs of good health? Well, I am learning more and more day by day! School me on what you know! (:

Thank you! I’ve learned I cut too much in one session, but I’m hoping it starts thriving again! Since my Juniper Procumbens does not back bud, will I be able to obtain more foliage where it’s already growing within the cascade? I really appreciate your advice as well! I’ll it alone a while until I am sure we are ready for another session.

Juvenile foliage as I said is what the tree produces when under stress. It has more surface area to cope with the loss of foliage. It is very sharp not soft like adult foliage. Because you removed so much foliage the tree will be stressed due to the loss of foliage and will produce juvenile foliage. This will take several years usually to grow out.
