Hi there, i’m Having a hard time deciding how to style this tree. About two years ago I pointed it out on a sandy hill whilst out for a walk with my girlfriend saying ‘that would make a nice bonsai’ without me realising she wrenched the tree straight out of the ground, I guess the sandy soil allowed some root to come with it, I kept it in a plastic bag for a week as we were on holiday and potted it up when I got home. It has grown vigorously and I have chopped about a third of the height off but am now at a loss of what to do with it. The branches seem too long and the needles are too far from the trunk and then there is too much gap between the lower and upper branches. Any ideas with how to style this tree would be appreciated.

I would wire the trunk to put movement into it and I would wire the other branches to bring them closer to the trunk with movement. Then I would possibly reduce the apex a small amount. It is difficult without being able to look closely at the tree. I might take the top 10cm? not sure how long to the part with long needles off, possibly jinn. But it is your tree and up to you. what you do with it. Needle size on such a young tree does not matter that will come in years.

Thankyou for responding so quick ye I agree with what your saying, I have tried pinching the largest shoots out to encourage back basing along those gangly branches and on the left branch there is a smaller shoot I will cut back to when it’s established a bit more. I think the tree looks smaller in the picture for some reason than it actually is and looking at the tree from a photo rather than the actual object I can see that top needs to come off like you say. I feel a bit more confident going ahead wiring and cutting now, thanks
