Saving a forgotten tree was created by richard.kogima

Dear all,

My 15 year old Chinese elm was not properly watered as I went on a summer trip, and my neighbors came later than expected to water it. It stayed some good 6-7 days without being watered at all, in full sunlight here in Switzerland.

As I came back, it was a very sad tree, all leaves dead. I took them down. Scratched the bark, and it’s mostly green all around the tree.

I’ve been reading that now I should basically just be patient and take care of it normally... but is there something else I should do that could help?

I have pruned the dead branches.

I also feel like the tree is “moving” easier if I try to move it in the vase. So to say, less fixed. Does that indicate any trouble with the roots?

Thank you for your help.

Most sincerely,
Richard

You will be very unlikely to revive this plant. You have it inside as well, which is not where it should have been. The fact that it is loose in the pot suggests the roots are dead You could wait but once dead it is dead and does not come back to life.

I see, thank you. The tree is not inside, just in the shade now, next to a window on the terrace.

stop messing with it. Keep it in the shade. Do NOT water the pot again untill the top of the soil starts to dry out. You CAN drown roots.

Do not prune, scratch, wiggle.. All the tree needs is to be left alone. :)

Time will tell how far the tree died back. If it was healthy and strong beforehand it could bounce back.
