When to start! Advice for a newbie please

Hello! I have grown my bonsai from seeds since Christmas. I think they may be birch and they are mostly doing well. From about 30 seeds, I have 5 which have been successful so far. But when do I start doing anything to them? I am concerned they will be really big soon! One is already 20cm and, look! He is growing branches! It makes me so happy but in true motherly fashion, I am concerned I am not bringing them up properly and will end up with fully grown trees! Please, do you have any advice?

So.. where to start..
First of al you are not growing bonsai, but normal trees, there is no such thing as bonsai seed.So you payed a lot of money for seed that you probably could have picked up from the ground ( if there are birch trees in your neighbourhood).
Now that we have that cleared up, trees belong outside. Inside they will die, without any doubt.
What to do next: place them outside, (but let them get used to full sun so shade first) , water them, repot into bigger pots in spring, fertilise a bit, repeat the next year for the next years. Horticulture first, bonsai after.. In the mean time study bonsai: there are good online courses on this site, this forum is a library on Its own, ask questions, YouTube, visit a local bonsai club,....名媛直播 techniques include repotting, wiring, pruning, soil, .... all with their own specific timings throughout the year.
Probably not what you wanted to hear but said in the nicest possible way.

Thank you, that is helpful. I know they are not bonsai, I was using the term to describe what I was trying to do and I bought a fun kit for little money for my child for Christmas, which is why we don’t know what they are. It is not money wasted as the kit gave us a lot of joy and we are so delighted to have successfully grown 5 trees to far. I have read quite a bit online actually, and watched several YouTube videos and nowhere can I find the answer to my question which is why I joined this forum hoping I might get an answer. But I thank you for the tips, they are always welcome.

Thank you, you did. So my next question is about size. If I do this, surely won’t they grow so big in this amount of time? I am worried I will miss the point at which I am to start - hence my original question. I will spend time looking around this site in due course and I’m sure I will find all the answers to my questions. Thank you.

I understand your concern, but what you are basically asking is a complete tutorial of how to make a bonsai out of seed, which will take me about a year to type....
In short ( but do bare in mind there are lots and lots of variables that can change ): grow a lot , cut back , grow again from a new leader, wire now and then, repot and work on roots, repeat for the next 10- 15 years.Mind you that all these things are done in exact moments during the year, depending on a lot of things. But, again, nothing you need to do now apart from keeping them alive ( outside!!!!!!)
