I just picked this up from a nursery and I though it had a good potential. After watching the Beginner's Course, I felt the urge of creating one. Do you have any suggestions on how to approach this nice juniper?

yes ( but this is not what you want to hear...): place it outside ( it will die inside, without any doubt) and keep it alive and healthy for at least a year ( already difficult for a lot of people). Meanwhile look at it from all sides, look at it a bit more, look at thousands of bonsai, follow courses and learn when to do what on trees ( really importantif you dont wantto kill it). But do not do anything NOW if you have no idea what you are doing. Might seem harsh but it's an honest answer

Seconding lucR

You’ll have to clean it up to understand what to do with it, but unless you already have good experience in keeping it alive and well, you’d need to develop that first.

difficult to tell from the picture but looks to have a nice base. I would cut the pot down so that the root base is visible, I would remove a small amount of the soil from the base to see what the trunk is like but that is about all. Bear in mind that the strength in Junipers is in the foliage so that means not pruning a lot off at any one time, and unless you know what you are doing then you need to study the plant from all sides and remember you can only cut off once but you can think about it as long as you want.

Thank you for the suggestion. I don't feel like I know what to do a 100% but I've got myself a few trees since March and all of them are doing good right now, making sure it's moist and getting enough sun.

Thanks for the honest answer. The picture looks like it's inside but I I have all my trees outside. I just finished the beginner's course and I was feeling pretty confident that's why I picked this one up. Obviously don't want to waste this tree that's why I'm asking for expert's opinions like the people in this forum. I am going to move on the advanced as I feel like I need to learn more.

So try to see the tree inside this bush, what is the flow of the trunk and main branches, choose a possible front for the tree, study the best style for it, before cutting it down.
In fact you may have to prune some dead branches, unusable branches and trim it a little to see clearly what's inside.
Good luck!

Good advice from Clicio, as alwayst.

This could take a long time, like months. You should be ready to do major cutting in spring, but if you are not sure, maybe the following spring. A big word in bonsai is patience. Maybe cut off a dead branch right now, or maybe you want it to remain. Be sure before you cut.

Easy to cut down.
Impossible to put it back on.

One of the reasons why I want to get into bonsai is to develop patience. Waiting for months? That is tough. Thank you for the tips.
