Hi everyone, new to the forum and the world of bonsai. I have amassed quite a few bonsai and I’m looking to get this prepared for the looming winter. All are from various spots on my property. Ive posted below the bonsai im growing. Any thoughts on wintering them would be much appreciated. They are either in a akadama or potting soil mixture. Climate zone is 5b-6b.
Thanks in advance.

inside they won't.
Outside: depends on your winters. Most place their bonsai in a frostfree garden shed or something like that if it freezes below -10 for an extended period.Others bring them in the garage from november till march because it freezes -20 all that time where they live...Your little saplings can probably use a bit more protection sooner, but remember in nature trees do not migrate to warmer places when it starts to freeze... ( horticulture...)

Oh, wait, even the Jacaranda? Or should that be brought inside for the winter. They are sub tropical are they not?

With seedlings as small as that, I would bring them indoors, in a place with high humidity.
The Jacarandá will die outdoors in the Canadian winter.

The jacaranda... will be a problem. Our homes are way to dry for trees, thats why most of the members here stay far away from socalled inside trees ( that do not exist, these is not one tree in the entire world that lives naturally indoors). You could try to mimic the climate where it comes from, but that means that water will be running from the walls in your home due to high humidity ...
But it all depends on how green your fingers are (horticulture again), your home, your climate, etc etc. Side note: 90% of the help my tree is dying questions here is about trees that die because they are inside...

So if i had an enclosed terrarium that i could maintain at higher humidity would this be optimal? I have a spare one and a terrarium fogger?

Go to
and see what it says about winter care. It is based in Rochester, NY, right across the lake from you and should be almost the same climate.
