Collected this small tree today. Was growing from a large tree root, fully exposed to sun all day, in south east coast UK. I love, it it has so many small leaves. Should it be kept full sun all day, should I keep it in the shade for awhile? Any advice is welcome

Collecting a tree this late in summer is risky. I hope you got it with lots of roots. For now leave it in shade, mist the leaves and no fertilizers until you see new growth. Also put a clear plastic bag on the plant to keep the moisture in. Make couple of holes in the bag to get some fresh air in but not too big, so the bag stays humid inside. You can google the black bag tehnique.
What soil did you use? For collected trees use pure sphagnom moss or large particle pumace.

Collecting right now in the northern hemisphere just about anywhere I would get a pretty big pot and just shovel up the tree and a pretty large ball of soil, big enough to get the entire root ball with as little disturbance as possible. Ideal would be just pick up the root ball and put it in the pot, but that would be pretty much impossible, so you should minimize the shock to the roots. Then make sure the root ball stays damp for a while.
Good luck.
Good luck.

I'm starting to regret my decision. The tree is planted in general bonsai soil from garden centre, topped up with compost soil I bought about 2 years ago. Not sure it drains well, as it still feels very damp this morning

Don't worry. Of course, I cannot see what you did, roots wise. But now is a pretty good time to collect, assuming you do not get hit with the short heatwave coming up the next 2 days.
It is a field maple. They are prone to mildew. So I disagree with the keeping things moist etc,
I would just pop it in the shade. Keep the substrate lightly moits but DO NOT think you need to keep it as wet as possible. Roots do not develop well in wet substrate, and the lower part of the pot will be much wetter than you think.
unless you really butchered the roots, it should be fine. For next time, collecting at this time would mean, as indicated above, that you pop it out, and leave the inner core of the rootball intact. Just scratch the outside and shake the big lumps of dirt off. Then fill the pot with a good open substrate such as coarse pumice.
Tomorrow a friend of mine and I will go look at some massive yew bushes. As we both still have a holiday trip planned at the end of august, we might only trim back and cut the surface roots. But then again. . We are preparing for the event in which we just pull them out.

Would it be any good to buy better soil and pumice, and repot it this morning before more time passes by? It has been in this soil for about 12 hours.

I would say leave it alone, it will be fine. Let it grow keep it well watered. There is nothing wrong with general compost. I would let it grow in the pot for the next year so it gets established, and re pot the following year. As long as the soil is draining it will be ok. I would have it in the sun for at least pat of the day,

I think I would cut the pot down so it is closer to the top of the pot, it is a bit too deep in the pot.
