from personal experience moss made things harder for me. i couldn't tell when the soil was dry or too wet and personally i think its more an aesthetic thing. you will also notice on this forum alot of members state to remove the moss. believe it or not watering is not an easy task for most people when it has to do with a tree in a pot people easily kill trees from over watering or not enough water. i have around 30 trees in my collection (nowhere near as many trees some people on here have) and all trees require a different amounts of water. it takes time to learn how to water your trees and keeping them alive with task as simple as watering should be your first step in this hobby. after all these trees are in pots and cant spread their roots in search of water and nutrient so they rely on you to provide it all. i do now have moss on some trees but it does not cover all the soil, they are more like patches and literally just turn brown during summer.

I will bet there will be several answers on this one.

Moss sits on the top of the soil, pulls water out of the soil, and puts the water into the air, just like the tree does. I don't see how moss could keep water in the soil since that is not what it does.

I do know that it is a real had job keeping the moss from growing up the tree. I thought it was cute once, but that was a long time ago.

My friend has a few old trees in his garden that we were trying to identify. All are flowering plants. Any help is appreciated.
