Hello. I am new to bonsai. And new to message boards to be honest. I apologize in advance if I screw this up . And thanks to everyone for providing this place
I have a Chinese elm I got 8 days ago. I got it from Brussels, so it's commercially massed produced. But the actual Brussels nursery is just a few miles from my house. I had no idea it was there, stumbled on it and stopped by and here we are.
I have a decent amount of yard care and lawn experience. I love working in the yard so I'm not a total nature newbie.
I live near Memphis zone 7b I believe. Got this medium sized Chinese elm 8 days ago. Kept it outside some the first couple of days, but we have had some threats of pretty strong thunderstorm with wind and I have kept it inside for most of the time.
I do have one of those inexpensive Amazon plant lights. Looks like 2 wands. It's set up about 12" from the plant. The elm is in a room with a large west facing window

Welcome to the bonsai hobby.
I would grow this outside, and not bother with lightwands. But I do not know how killing the climate in memphis is!

Zone 7 is a little tough for chineese Elm. In winter I would protect it in a coldframe or unheated greenhouses during winter.
Indoors is not really a good idea.

Heavy winds can be a concern. I put mine on the ground when that threatens, or tie the big ones to the stands. I have had trees blown out of the pot, and had them blown off the stand and smashed the pot. I probably should tie them all down as squirrels have knocked little ones off before.

I am also in zone 7. My elms are outside yearround. Come wind or shine. They thrive.
