So I recently purchased a 5 year old premna pre bonsai growing in a regular sized nursery pot. I bought the tree mid summer. When i received the tree it was extremely pot bound and beginning to grow roots out of the bottom of the pot. So I decided it best to repot as soon as possible. So I chose this pot. The next step was to prune the root ball so it may fit in its new pot. This required removing half of the root ball and even with removing that much of the roots it still has quite a large mound of top roots that are above the soil line of the pot. It had to be wired in really tight. I'm hoping that I didnt just kill my bonsai by removing too much of the roots or by underpotting the tree. Any advice would be greatly appreciated..

It's usually a good idea to seek advice on how to do something before you do it. Thee isn't much to say other than that it is the worst time of year for root pruning.
