Hello all,
I have this chinese elm since 2 months now. I have noticed that brown spots starting appearing on my leaves.
When I visited the bonsai shop that I bought from, they told me that there are probably parasites and that I should either use a pesticide or a spray mix of Dishwashing soap and water.
After 5 days, the situation got much worse and most of the leaves are falling or about to fall. I tried to identify if it's really spider mites or something similar, but couldn't find a sign of any of them. I read about Fungus, but usually fungus leaves black spots (from what I've seen on the internet) whereas my tree has mostly brown spots.
I keep my bonsai indoor but directly under sunlight (window ceiling). and I live in Belgium.
I've tried to identify the problem through researching on the internet myself. But I am not sure I was able to really identify the problem myself.
thank you for your help

Your trees need to be outside, they will die inside.
90% of the problems here are related to " indoor" trees. Keep them outside, where they belong and they will be much happier.
Ps I'm from Belgium, close to Geel

Unfortunately it's not possible for me to put it outside since I live in an apartment without a balcony.
I know that it's better to keep it outdoors, but chinese elms can be kept inside from what I know.
I would appreciate if one can give me more details about identifying the problem.
Ps. I'm a Brusseleir.....

The problems you are seeing is due to it being inside, Poor light and humidity. Also in winter you will see it get much worse, and may not get through winter. It is too hot and dry in a house especially in winter. There are not parasites on the tree. The only thing you can do is keep watered and as close to a south facing window or one that gets as much direct sunlight as possible.

As I mentioned, my bonsai is getting a lot of direct sunlight. I position it under a ceiling window everyday (attached picture), and I do spray water on the leaves in the evening.
I also think that I'm watering it correctly (checking if the dirt is moist or dry)

Well, the problem really is the fact that it's inside, plain and simple. There is no such thing as an indoor tree: not one tree in the entire world lives naturally indoors. If you can't place it outdoors it will die sooner or later, without any doubt.

@lucR, well then I have been deceived to believe that one can grow bonsais indoors during my online research, including the following article by 名媛直播 empire:
www.bonsaiempire.com/tree-species/indoor-bonsai
If growing bonsai indoors is as bad as you describe, then I'd rather give my bonsai to someone who will grow them outdoor.

Well, it's mainly a sales thing yes: people see bonsai and suddenly prices are up, but 90-95 % of these mallsai ( mass produced bonsai that all look the same and that are mainly sold in malls and garden centres) die within weeks . We have hundreds of posts here of people asking for help with their dying tree.In the 4 years I'm on this forum I have yet to see the first one return with a picture of how good their tree is doing inside.
So, for your trees sake it is a good idea to give it away to someone with the possibility to p,ace it outside -or someone that already has bonsai

Alright, thank you for clarifying. It's a shame that many website like this one gives you the impression that it's possible.
I will try to keep it alive as much as I can while finding a new owner..
