I found this morning my Chinese Elm had lost a lot of leaves. I could lightly brush my hand over it. I droppes lots more. Worrying I made nicks in the bark to check for life. Some have good green but on the trunk not so much. Is this normal? I'm still learning. Id my tree dying or dead?

It is dying because it is inside, trees die inside. Place it ouside in the shade first, give it a good drench with a garden hose ( untill water spills out of the drainage hole underneath), then gradually over some time out in the sun. It's not too late for this one

Thanks I have moved it outside. Its in my growhouse in the garden keeping my Buxus company.

I am confused though. I've had the tree 6 months to a year, it's always been inside and thrived. Even during this heat wave. I think I might have forgot to water it for a day or two and last night the soil was dry. Watered straight away and now given her a good watering until water collected in under tray. Made sure to water over leaves and mist spray too.

Bought as an indoor tree (hence the pot having under tray) and heard Chinese Elms good tree for both inside and outside

There is not one tree in the entire world that lives naturally indoors. There are trees that live in warmer to tropical climates that are called " indoor" but our homes are way too dry to mimic the natural climate they live in. In the short or long run these trees die. 90% of all help my tree is dying posts here are from socalled indoor trees that are dying from being inside. Your elm can stay outside all year long , just protect it from deep frost by placing it in an unheated garden shed.
Btw, loose that tray, it is of little to no use.

Ok. I had been aiming to move it outside later this year. Would give her more room to grow rather than the branches hitting against the window pane. I had got her to brighten up my office space. Still, I got my Carmona for that. I hope she'll grow well and come back with a new lease of life after being outside.

There is no such thing as an indoor plant. There are plants that will tolerate poor conditions, and will survive in those conditions. Chinese Elms are hardy, they do not generally do well in the poor light and low humidity that is in any dwelling. They do grow much better in sun, full sun and rain, and all the other elements that are normal. Chinese Elms will cope easily with -10C Mine have, and they are better for it. Branches and leaves become elongated and drawn to try to get light. The way this plant is growing is indicative of poor light and of generally poor growing conditions.

Thanks for the reply. Could you elaborate more on what you mean by the way it's been growing shown sign of poor light and growing conditions? The tree was up until this point on a window sill so it had plenty of natural light. It was watered often as needed in the heatwave and had nutrients from bonsai feed in the water. Was misted with an atomiser for humidity.

...plenty of natural light... nop ,not really... you dont get sunburn behind a window which means that the light is filtered ( certainly in modern days window glass with their special coatings)
You can easily see that a tree has a lack of light by its long, leggy pale green new growth.
Btw, you dont need (expensive) bonsai fertiliser, every general universal fertiliser will do, and will cost you a lot less. Concerning misting... i don't ( and i don't think a lot of them here ever do it, normal watering is sufficient) but there are ongoing discussions about that...
Do bare in mind that you will need to check moisture level of the soil more often now its outside, don't foregt to water it

Well, the harmful UV would be filtered sure. Not sure I understand fully what would be missing for the tree through filtration but then I must profess I'm not an expert horticulturist.Thank you for taking the time to explain both of you though. If I was looking for a tree to more suited to an indoor environment, would their be a species I should look at? Someone suggest a Ficus to me once. Would that be a good one for an office space at a window?

...ficus.... once settled they do fine, but they dislike air draft, being moved or turned around.
Indoor trees... sorry but thats a no go for me, they just don't do fine in our homes.
