I've successfully grown about 15 trees from seed using a starter kit and have recently split into their own pots 4 days ago. I used westland bonsai potting mix and watered. However I've noticed that some of the leaves are getting brown edges and was wondering why this might be? Would this be due to overwatering? I watered them them well when I potted them and have given a bit of water daily just to keep the top wet as the roots are still very small.
Would the brown patches be to them being repotted? What would be the best course of action if any and should I be removing leaves like this?
I also have no idea about the type of bonsai they are so if anyone could help identify that would be very much appreciated.
These trees are about 3 months old and are currently outside in a tomato house against my garage and in permanent shade apart from when the sun moves over around midday. The Tomato house sheilds them from the heat as the sun moves over so they are never in direct sunlight. I've attached pictures of the bonsai kit and the bonsai. All these trees grew from two packets and have just sown the other two packets so will maybe have more trees.
Never thought I would get so many from two packets. Lol.
Thank you in advance for any help.

But.. ( here we go ).....you are not growing bonsai, nor can you get an answer as to which type of bonsai they are. You are growing normal seed, that grows into normal trees, there is no such thing as a "bonsai" species. All the bonsai are grown in a specific way over many, many, many ( decades...) years. So, bonsai "kits" are really a way to sell normal seed more expensive..
That being said, just keep watering them, repot when needed ( as you did now) and start studying what it takes to create bonsai. This forum is a good start.
I wouldnt worry too much about the little brown patches, maybe provide a bit more shade.

So regarding applying bonsai to one or two of these trees I have a question and apologies if this is stupid. By keeping the trees small would the leaves grow to full size or would they be in proportion as I'm not sure how a miniature Birch would look with massive leaves. Lol.
Regarding a typical Japanese bonsai what sort of tree / seed would I need to buy. Would like to try growing from seed as having grown these birch has got me a bit hooked.

applying " bonsai"..? bonsai means tree in a pot, and there is not one "action" to apply to create a bonsai, its a multitude of techniques , combined with personal taste and lots and lots of time.
You want to grow more from seed. that is fine but bare in mind that you will not be doing anything bonsai-ish to them in the next 5-10 years... So i would go to a local nursery, go to the forgotten plants corner, and search for the trees nobody wants because they are all gnarly and twisted. These are the ones we want. Do not mention bonsai to the seller ( you will see money signs appear in his eyes), just say i will take this ugly tree off your hands for half of the price, nobody wants it anyway.
Typical japanese bonsai... you mean the style or the trees? Always go for native trees, they are native to your neighbourhood for a reason

Posted 4 years 6 months ago #60918The brown edges on the leaves are often a sign of problems with the roots. Be carefull watering these. The soil from what I can see is very wet. You keep it in a greenhouse in the shade? Personally, I grow all my seedlings in loads of sun. And if I am concerned, only in morning / evening sun. But sunlight is life for plants.. As these have grown up in very dark circumstances, be carefull with the sun the first weeks; they can get sun burnt easily if not used to the sun.
I would recommend just letting these grow up a little, and for the rest, let them do their thing.
