Hi! I'm completely new to bonsai, and I recently purchased a small dwarf pomegranate tree. I'm hoping to thicken the trunk, and was wondering what the best method might be to accomplish this? I live in Canada (Zone 5), so I am hesitant to plant it in the ground, as it would have to be dug up come fall.
I am assuming that this is something that you tend to start early-on in the process, but if I am mistaken and should be taking other steps first, I welcome any and all suggestions! Thank you

What do you mean by small? Do you mean young small? One way to get the plant to grow is a bigger pot than will be needed. It does depend on what you want achieve also, do you want a small tree or a larger one? Posting a picture would also help.

Good morning, thanks so much for your response! I purchased the tree at a local garden centre, so I don't have any information about it besides the species, but from the size I assume that it is quite young? I've attached a photo as well Over time, I'm hoping to maintain a height of approximately 1-2 ft., with a thicker trunk (if that is possible).

In Canada it is summer now, right? Then the tree needs to be outside. Come fall it needs to be in cold but frost Free location.
The outer pot seems to be missing drainage. If so, take it out of it.
Growing trunks: biggest possible pot, best possible care and hold back on pruning.
30 to 60 cm tree with a thicker trunk is possible, but takes time.

GRow it as a patio plant for a few years. Every year in early spring, sort out the branches you want to keep, and which to remove. Over time it will thicken up and you can decide to move it into a different container.
Note: These grow well from cuttings. EVen thick branches. So when pruning, create more plants!
