Oak from acorn - growing indoors and pot size was created by drudolf

Hello all-

Earlier this year I picked up a few acorns and threw them in a pot with some dirt on a whim. Lo and behold, one of them sprouted and appears to be growing feverishly. It's just a little guy now but I don't want to stunt him (or her...?).

I have been reading around but I'm still not so sure what I'm supposed to do next. I believe I need to give this guy some room to grow and get him out of this tiny pot. Would a 10 - 20 gallon (30 - 70 liter) pot be sufficient to encourage some growth? (Would that be excessively big?). I have seen "grow outdoors" suggested in numerous threads on here, but I live in the city and that's not exactly feasible. Can anyone offer some guidance?

I attached a picture from about a week ago. Since then the six leaves have grown quite a bit, it's funny looking with full size leaves growing on the scrawny little trunk. Any advice or pointers appreciated!

Hello and welcome to the forum
1: outdoor or it will die, without any doubt
2 : in spring repot in bigger pot( one size up) I hope that the pot it is in now has a drainage hole, or it will die of root rot
3: repeat 15 years while performing some pruning now and then

Most trees require a dormant period, which is signalled by daylight becoming shorter and temperatures dropping near or below freezing. It may be possible to set up a bonsai refrigerator with lights set up inside on a timer. Nobody has mentioned doing that successfully.
Trees are successful organisms, given the environment their genome expects. Anything significantly different will turn a tree into toothpicks.

Ok - just to be clear do you mean outside "on a porch" or outside as in dig a hole and plant it outside?

Can anyone point me in the direction of a resource which will explain more about this? All of the write-ups I have seen focus on already mature trees.

Thank you.

Outside is not inside. An open porch maybe but an enclosed one no. The best place would be in the ground for a few years, that is the way t get trunk thickness. Oak are a deciduous species, the must have cold and that means lower than in a house. They are deciduous, that means they lose their leaves which they must do or they will weaken and die. Oaks need sunshine and air, If you can't do that then give them away and grow something that will survive in a house.

Outside pretty much means where the sun shines unobstructed, the wind blows unobstructed, the rain falls, and the temperature is not moderated by walls or anything. Mine are on the back porch, but there isn't a roof or any walls, just plant stands. A screened in porch might let the tree survive. Glassed in, probably not. It has to have lots of sun shine.
