Chinese elm - leaf loss?

Acquired a Chinese elm in April this year and for the first two months it was growing rapidly, and I was having to cut it back every couple of weeks. Recently however it’s gradually started to lose more and more leaves, with less and less growth, I was wondering if anyone had any thoughts as to what it might be?
The only thing I can think of is that it’s lost a bit of soil, as I will have removed some each time as I clear leaves out of the soil, perhaps exposing the roots a bit too much? Any input is appreciated anyway

The problem is that it's inside, trees die inside. Plus your soil looks dry, but I can't judge it really good from the picture. So: outside, give it a good drenching and it will be fine. This one still has a chance
