Hi there, last weekend I popped down to my local garden centre and bought a conifer tree, with a view to trying my hand at wiring for the first time. Below I've included some before and after photos. I'd be really grateful if people could suggest how, if at all, I could encourage the growth of some new branches nearer the base of tree. As it stands, the gap between the first branch and the base of the trunk is quite a bit wider than I'd like.

are you sure it is alive? The foliage is very yellow and for a conifer which should be green. You will not get any back budding on the trunk, You might on a Yew.

The health of the tree aside ( like the previousposter already said) , that wiring is just awful. The entire bottom part of the trunc has wire for no reason, i see wires crossing, over foliage, wrong wire, etc etc, ...you should really look into some wiring lessons ( youtube, this forum...). I know everybody has to learn ( my wiring still isnt as i'd like it) but this is just plain wrong.

I did not look at the wire, I was more concerned about the tree. The wire is not suitable for use on trees, and it is not doing anything for the style of the tree. The health of the tree is more important than wiring or styling, take it off and get the tree healthy first, and learn how to wire with bonsai wire.
