I have green mound juniper. I live in Minnesota. This is my first bonsai tree present. I am not sure how to properly winterize this bonsai plant. I am planning to bring this juniper into my dark attached car garage, as the November begins. How much light, how often from a lamp does this plant require? My garage does not have any windows. Any tips on watering will help also. Thank you.

No leave it outside. No light will do serious damage.

The tree is 10 years old. It is in a 14 inch bonsai pot. Should I dig a hole in the ground outside and put the bonsai plant inside the hole with mulch up to the root ball?
How do i protect the top branches from cold wind?

Find a bonsai society there in Minnesota. There almost certainly is one in Minneapolis. Ask what they do, and when. In Rochester, NY, a guy who knows his stuff moves all his trees into a garage in October, heated to 27F/-3C and moves them out in March. I think Minnesota is colder and probably windier so you might want to move sooner than New York. Good luck.

Are you able to find out from your friend in New York how he keeps the bonsai in his garage. Is the garage dark without any light? Does he water the bonsai? Thank you. I will try to find out forums in Minnesota.

Watering in the winter is the same as in the summer, when the soil starts to dry out, it needs water... as a general rule of thumb... however in winter there is far less evaportation, especially in a wind protected structure, so I might water my trees a few times between october and march, depending on the weather. this year watering was in full swing, but it didn't rain in this part of Germany for most of march and april, as well as a good deal of may.

Thank you. What would you recommend if the bonsai plant is stored in dark, attached garage? In terms of light, storing (mulch over roor ball), and watering at the right temperature.
