Should I re-pot? was created by JustJol

I just received a ficus tree in the mail about a week ago and was wondering if i should wait to repot or if i should do it sooner than later. Some places I've been reading are saying that the trees stop growing if put in a bonsai pot, is this true for the entire tree or is it just the trunk?

I would not put that tree in a bonsai pot.

Wrong time of year as well, re potting now would probably kill it.

Hi Just Joil,

In general in a bonsai pot the trunk growth comes to a virtual stop (However if you look at pictures of bonsai how they develop from year to year, you see this is not true). 名媛直播 will continue to grow, but at a slower pace. Which is why people recommend building the main branches, trunk and roots before potting in a bonsai pot.

Ficus is one of those species that loves early summer repot. Being tropical, if it is cold and dark they respond poorly.

For your tree, I am not convinced it is fully healthy. Too many bare sections and little fresh growth.

The main roots I see here are very big.

I think if it were mine, I would take it out of the current pot and gently tease apart the roots and create a flatter rootbal with minimal removal of roots. Then plant in a much shallower, wider container and liet ti grow for the year. Trim the tree a little to create more primary - secondary branching (You now have pretty much only primary branches). Then next spring decide whether the health is good enough
