Oak Yamadori Collection was created by Deathcat

Hi there,

I’ve had my eye on an oak that’s part of a hedge near to me that I want to collect; I wanted to collect when dormant in winter but I hadn’t got permission until a couple of weeks ago.

Having done a bit of reading I’m seeing a lot of people collecting oaks up to early June... I’m north uk, so it’s not long put out leaves.

So my question is... when I collect should I leave all branches with leaves on it, of should those get removed at collection?

Thanks, I’ve had a good read of that - and prompted me to consider collection now..

Doesn’t seem to address cutting back foliage though, I can see the root information.

My concern is that energy reserves will be depleted by putting out new leaves. If I collect now and take that off surely it will stress the tree more

Here’s the tree btw...

I would not collect it now, why risk the tree for the sake of a few months? Unless it is going to be destroyed if you don't it would be better to wait.

Thanks Geoff,

The link provided above had steered me down the route of taking the tree out now.

I get that there will be different opinions on this matter; my intention was to collect at winter but I’m seeing a lot of info on Oak saying this method may lead to greater success...

With respect, Harry Harrington has years of experience collecting, and clearly knows what he is doing. If you have never done it before then the safest option if you want the tree to survive, I would not consider collecting at this time of year, and I have done some collecting. We collect almost all species in the winter, once the leaves are off and the trees are dormant.

Have you tried summer collecting of oaks?
Harry has and has seen a huge increment in survival rates.

No I have not but my point was that he has a lot of experience in doing it.
