Dying bonsai tree!

Hi,
I just found a bonsai tree that someone didn't want anymore. I don't know what type it is though I think it is a ficus because of the leaf shape. It is almost dead, almost all the leaves have fallen off and the ones that remain are curled and brown. There are a few sprouts that still have a little bit of green and a small twig snapped off and the inside was green. I have never had a bonsai before nor any type of tree so I'm not sure how to bring it back to life. I watched a youtube video (for a chinese elm recovery) and it said to put it into a second pot filled with water for 10 minutes, then let it drain and repeat every couple of days. I did just that but not sure if I should do more.
As it's my first bonsai, I don't know if it has any disease, pest, or rotting roots. It has some white spots on the bark but when I scratch it off it seems to be just bark. I also found some clearish looking balls inside of a dead leaf, look like they might be cocoons of some sort? I have attached pictures below.
Hope you can help! Thanks!

Green inside branches does not mean anything.

One would-be bonsai enthusiast stopped dead in his tracks. :S This is not the way it's supposed to be.

Yes, there must be more to life.
Hang on to the pot.
