Hi all,
i'm going to have another go at bonsai. Previously, i'd kept a handful for nearly 2 years. I got a little carried away in experimenting and gave them all mouldy white leaf disease. A little upsetting but i've learnt and i'm older and more patient these days so i'm going to have another go. I found a local garden centre that has bonsai material for sale and decided to buy a couple of acer's. There in plastic flower pots, so i just wanted to clarify. I'm guessing that i should wait until the "tree's" need repoting, before i put them in traditional bonsai pots? Or should i move them earlier to get them use to that style of pot. If so, what time of year should i do this?
Thanks for any help in advance.

The bonsai pot really is the last step in the development of a bonsai. It is not because it is in a pot that it becomes a bonsai ( well, technically it does, bonsai meaning tree in pot), but I think you will agree that if you put this young sapling into a bonsai pot it will not all of a sudden become a bonsai. So, let it grow, repot in a bigger container when needed, or plant it in your garden, let it grow, fatten up the trunc, and in a few years dig it up, arrange the roots, place it back , let it grow a few more years, repeat. Meanwhile prune bit here and there.... In 10-15 years you can start thinking about a bonsai pot...
Repotting is typically done in a period of dormancy, right before buds break , so mostly early spring
