Maples are not my speciality ( there are too many subspecies) but they seem grafted. You say get them where they need to be: where do you want them? Do you plan to make bonsai of them, if so, how tall do you want them. Or do you plan on planting them in your garden?
Could you provide us with a bit more info about what exactly you want with these trees?

Nice gift, congrats!

Really Nice trees, but not necessary Good bonsai materials. I would plant them in the ground and enjoy them as garden trees. It might be possible to find Good branch structure f?r bonsai up high, now or in the future. Then airlayering can be considered.

I was actually thinking the very same! That they were too thin and tall for bonsai and that i would have to air layer. I was hoping I could do something....thank you so much! For the advice

What you can do is cut back the new growth just up to the last pair of leaves, except where you want them to larger.
Otherwise you gonna end up with very long internodes.
Cut a little piece above the pair of leaves and save a piece of the branch (approximate 2 cm) to prevent die back
