What looks strongly to me like an air layer Momiji (Japanese Maple) branch in a pot that i bought from a store in early spring this year has failed to produce any leaves.
It created a few very small leaves (no more than say 8mm in diameter) but they were all close to the trunk and quickly died. You can see in photos the blackened shriveled leaves that remain.
Now it seems as though the "plant" has entirely given up the ghost, all the buds are gone or worn out, and there are no new buds to speak of.
I put a pretty thick layer of quartz on the surface of the soil to prevent weeds taking root.. could that have perhaps starved the thing of oxygen?
Can i save this guy or is he, to quote Beck, a lost cause?
