I don't know if this is a stupid question, but I bought a ficus bonsai online and it already had leaves (duh) and I don't like how large they are. I've been reading about defoliating them and I can't figure out if it's okay to defoliate the preexisting leaves or if I can only defoliate new growth, thanks!

It depends a lot on how healthy your plant is. If your plant is not very healthy defoliating will cause branches to die, and you will have poor budding.

Defoliating is normally done on the whole tree, all leaves.
