First plant advice was created by kulsb

Hello!
I purchased my first plant 3 days ago and I think its a ginseng. I got a pot, bonsai soil mix, and fertilizer today and repotted it, followed the instructions provided by the store owner on how to water it(after potting it, let the pot sit in water until the soil suck up all the water, and is completely wet and repeat when soil is dry).

For now, I just wanted to know, if the tree is healthy and what I should be doing to keep it healthy and alive.

The tree is indoor, Ontario, Canada.

Thank you!

Allways water from the top. Do not let it sit in water.

Sorry to disappoint you, but you don't have a bonsai but a houseplant in a bonsai pot...

Once your night time temps don't drop below the 5-10C anymore, bring it outside. Let it get used to the sun slowly as it will burn if you move from indoor into full sun. It will love the outside in summer.

Hi everyone.

I bought my first Zelkova aka Japanese Elm bonsai yesterday, I have placed it on my drawer in my room or should I place it on my window sill where the light is more. My room has ventilation cause I have my small top window 24hrs open, and when should I prune my bonsai. I would appreciate your advice

I have attached a photo of my bonsai.

thank you

Hi Pierre, welcome.

Unfortunately. there is the misconception that bonsai are side-table plants. Whereas in fact they are just trees kept small through a range of techniques. And as all plants, but especially trees, they need to be outside as much as possible. Zelkova is hardy in all but the most inhospitable areas. Chinese elms are a little less hardy but can still stay outdoors yearround in many places. Be carefull with full sun in the first weeks outside: They need to adjust or they burn in midday sun

I think it is important to verify you actually have zelkova and not a chinese elm, as these are often mislabelled. Can you show a picture of a leaf?
